ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD MINIMISATION
How do you feel after a day out in nature versus a day at the computer? One makes us feel far better than the other, right? So while the evidence might still be very much contested out there in science land, there’s no question, with the research that has been done so far, that we should approach electromagnetic field (EMF) and electromagnetic radition (EMR) exposure with caution and smarts.
These words aren’t written to alarm, simply to explore the topic, examine health effects from the research, identify common exposures and give you super-simple tips for reducing exposure in your day-to-day life.
Caution until proven safe makes a whole lot more sense to me than safe until the poop hits the fan, and oops.
According to many researchers in the field (see what I did there?), we must reduce our exposure levels to EMFs and EMR, especially in Australia and the United States, whose ‘safe’ limits of exposure to wireless technology are up to a million times higher than those of other countries (e.g. Austria). More than 25,000 articles have suggested caution on this subject, including one by the World Health Organization in May 2011 calling EMFs ‘possibly carcinogenic’, and yet at every opportunity we seem to introduce wi-fi into our lives and public spaces. Germany advises its citizens to use ethernet cabling instead of wi-fi in homes, offices and schools. France has banned wi-fi in schools. Large countries like these don’t do such things on a whim – they look at the evidence and wisely proceed with caution. Caution until proven safe makes a whole lot more sense to me than safe until the poop hits the fan, and oops.
Given we’re so reliant on technology, you might think it’s impossible to do anything, but it’s totally possible. Here are my favourite minimisation tips, inspired by multiple discussions with building biologist and PhD candidate on the subject Nicole Bijlsma:
➊ Have your phone on flight mode at bedtime.
➋ Use an old-fashioned clock, get rid of digital clock radios and do away with phones in the bedroom altogether.
➌ If you must use an electric blanket, switch it on 15 minutes before bed, and when you get into bed, switch it off – unplugged from the wall.
➍ If you iron in your bedroom, unplug from the wall after a session.
➎ Switch your wi-fi router off at night for the whole house, and when it’s in use, store it behind something solid so that it’s not openly emitting into the room. We have ours behind a solid trunk coffee table. When a building biologist measured the difference it was quite amazing!
➏ Consider an ethernet cable for your computer rather than using wi-fi.
➐ If you must have a baby monitor, move it to the other side of the nursery so it’s at least more than a metre from your baby’s head, and have it on a voice-activated setting, so that it isn’t constantly emitting a frequency.
➑ Let the kids use a computer that’s connected with an ethernet
